Students spelling "together"

On Thursday, November 9, the Yarmouth School Committee approved the formation of the Yarmouth School Department Mission Committee. The Mission Committee is a School Committee sub-committee that will meet monthly during the school year and whose purpose will be to:

  • Encourage and support school staff in developing and implementing programming, curriculum, and instruction that further the School Department’s mission of empowering all students to lead fulfilling lives in a changing world.
  • Promote an inclusive environment where all students may thrive.
  • Identify systemic inequities that impact educational spaces.
  • Propose recommendations to address all forms of institutional bias in the Yarmouth Schools pertaining to race, religion, country of origin, gender or gender identity, age, sexual orientation, disability, socio-economic status, or any other protected category or identity.

In addition to the three School Committee members, who will be the voting members of the Committee, the Mission Committee will include an Advisory Panel appointed by the Chairperson of the School Committee in consultation with the Superintendent of Schools.

Along with identified staff members, the Advisory Panel will include, if possible:

  •             One high school student
  •             One parent of a student in Pre-K through grade 1
  •             One parent of a student in grades 2-5
  •             One parent of a student in grades 6-8
  •             One parent of a student in grades 9-12

Advisory Panel members will be appointed for one school year.

For the remainder of this academic year, Mission Committee meetings will be held from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on the following dates (location TBD):

  •             January 11
  •             February 8
  •             March 14
  •             April 11
  •             May 9

It is our intent that the Advisory Panel will represent the diverse makeup of our school community. If you would like to nominate someone to be considered as a member of the Advisory Panel, please provide their name and contact information, along with which role they could fill from the list above, by emailing this information to Jill Pettengill (jill_pettengill @ yarmouthschools.org) by December 1.

All nominations will be confidential. We hope to confirm appointments by December 15.
