April 26th Parent Note

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are truly hopeful that this recent bout of April showers marks the end of a long Maine winter, as it is time to prepare for the final stretch of the school year (and perhaps some May flowers as well).   On that note, please take a few minutes to review the following schedule for final exams which will begin on Thursday, June 13th for students in grades 9-11.  Additionally, we have several spring celebrations to announce:

Art Show - Please join the Advanced Photo and AP Studio Art students at the opening of their Annual Spring Art Exhibit at Clayton's Cafe on Monday, April 29, 4:30 - 5:30.  The exhibit will be up through May 31.

Prom - Saturday May 5th.   This year’s prom will be held at the the Frontier restaurant at Fort Andross in Brunswick from 8 to 11 pm.   Tickets are $35 each, and a reminder that per district policy, students may be breathalyzed on their way into prom.  Please feel free to review this guide from CASCO-BAY CAN which offers helpful information for parents.

Junior Privileges - This will be the second year where 11th grade students may earn off-campus privileges during the 4th quarter during their study halls and lunches.  In order to qualify, juniors must meet the following expectations:

  • receive parent permission.

  • have an 85 or above in all classes.

  • be up to date with community service hours (37.5 hours).

  • have completed 1 CEP.

  • be up to date on all cornerstones from semester one.

  • No major behavioral incidents & detentions served in a timely manner

  • turn in a signed parent permission slip and a photocopy of the current car registration for the vehicle(s) that the student intends to drive (if the student drives).

As another sure sign of spring, the Yarmouth Education Foundation funded more than $14,000 in grants during our spring grant cycle bringing our 2018-2019 total to more than $40,000 in grants impacting all four Yarmouth schools and all students K-12.  The high school grants included a Casco Bay Water Quality Buoy project that will alert fishermen, clammers, kelp farmers, oyster farmers and others in our community to water pollution and other conditions, a self defense program that will teach students ways to avoid and escape dangerous situations, and innovative tools for a new class at Yarmouth High School called Motors and Mechanisms that will allow students to explore the motorized movements of simple and complex machines.   YEF’s support relies on our community’s support, and there are many ways to support the Yarmouth Education Foundation this month:

  • Wednesday, 5/1:  Join YEF at Brickyard Hollow on Wednesday, May 1, from 5-9PM. Brickyard Hollow on Main Street will donate 5% of sales that evening to YEF. Please note the date change as this event is now 5/1.

  • Sunday, 5/5: Join us at Royal River Books on Sunday, May 5, for YEF Sunday! Royal River Books is opening on a Sunday, just for us. The store is kindly donating 20% of all sales to YEF - wow! Plus, all customers will receive free gift wrapping and a free lip balm. It’s a perfect place to find a Teacher Appreciation Week gift or something special for Mother’s Day. We are very grateful to Amy and the entire Royal River Books team for this generous offer.

  • Tuesday, 5/28: Join YEF at Otto Pizza on Tuesday, May 28, from 5-9PM. Otto (at the corner of Main & Elm Streets) will donate a % of sales to YEF that evening.

Many thanks to Brickyard Hollow, Royal River Books, and Otto for their support. We are grateful for our community partners! Shop Local and support Yarmouth schools! We look forward to seeing you at these upcoming community events.
