April 17, 2020

Good morning,

I am writing with just a few more items to share with you before vacation week:

FROM THE YSD TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

We have observed an increase in repairs needed to student-issued devices due to liquid damage and overheating. Students should keep food and drink away from their school-issued device at all times. It's also important, especially when streaming video in Hangouts, YouTube, etc, that devices are not used on soft surfaces like bed comforters, pillows, or towels/blankets. When they are used in this manner the vent at the back of the device gets blocked and the device will overheat quickly. If students must use a device in these sorts of locations we ask that you put a hard object, like a book, under the device.

YARMOUTH COLTS REGISTRATION

Colts soccer registration begins right after the April break. For registration information please see this link: Colts Soccer Information link. This information is important for present 2nd through 7th graders or rising 3rd through 8th graders who plan to play.

RESOURCES TO HELP

I have spoken with several families this week who have been impacted by Covid-19 in many different and challenging ways. If you are having challenges at home and can use some support please do not hesitate to reach out to us. There are many school-based and community resources to help. I am resending you this link to a letter from the Yarmouth District Student Support Team:  https://target.brightarrow.com/userfiles/29852/files/Yarmouth School District and Community Resources.pdf .

This letter provides some quality, comprehensive resources that can help you support your children and families during this difficult time. Again, I encourage you to review these resources and reach out to our Student Support professionals at YES if they can be of any help.

CONSTRUCTION PICTURES

Construction continues to stay on schedule as we head into the break! I have added some addtional pictures to our construction slideshow. Please note the slideshow will share the most recent images first as you view them over time.

The surveyors were on site this week to locate the building corners for the foundation contractor to begin foundations. Photo one is the view of the addition looking back at the existing school entrance. You will see the site contractor has been prepping for building footings. Rebar and panels to form the foundations is on site. In photo two the foundation contractor is making the rebar mesh for the concrete piers that will be part of the structure of the building. In photo three, you will see that I got to go on a field trip (with safe social distancing!) to North Yarmouth to select boulders for the courtyard. The boulders will provide a variety of seating sizes for students in that area.

Thank you to Wendi Holden for the pictures and information!

100 FUN THINGS TO DO AT HOME FOR "STAY-CATION"

In speaking with teachers, students and families this week one thing was clear. People are ready for a break! Everyone typically has different plans for school vacations. Some people travel, visit family and like to be on the go. Others prefer to stay home, catch their breath and relax. Clearly this "stay-cation" will be a different April break for everyone. If you would like to change things up and find some new adventures I came across this resource:

100 Fun Things to Do at Home

From virtual tours of museums to animal cams, there are some amazing things here to explore. You can even "virtually experience" all of the rides at Disney World!

Regardless of how your family chooses to spend next week I hope that everyone has a good one. Stay well!

Take care,

Ryan Gleason, YES Principal
