Grade 5: Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 PM
Grade 6: Wednesdays 7:00-7:35 AM
Grade 7/8 Tuesdays & Thursdays 7:00-7:35 AM
Grade 5 explores the jazz style of playing. Students begin with familiar songs and apply jazz techniques (accents, dynamics, soloing). The blues and blues form are also explored in depth at the Grade 5 level.
Grade 6 begins with review of the blues form and branches out playing "charts" which is music arranged for jazz bands. Students in the sixth grade will play a variety of styles including rock, swing and latin.
Grade 7 & 8 students take the next steps in their jazz development and expand their skills through playing music in the more traditional jazz idiom. Literature is selected more in line with "jazz standards" and by well know jazz composers (such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn etc..)
Who May Participate:
Any students in the grades listed above are welcomed into the jazz ensemble. Usual instrumentation is for Saxes, Trumpets, Trombones, Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums; however, music is adapted and re-scored so that non-traditional instruments are welcomed and encouraged to participate (flute, clarinet, tuba, violin). Students who are unsure of their skill level should meet with Mr. C to talk about the music level and find the best "fit" for them in jazz band.
