 Job Description:

The Yarmouth School Department is seeking a candidate for Assistant Principal at Harrison Middle School, which serves 500 students in grades 5-8.  The successful candidate will be a collaborative, innovative educational leader with excellent communication skills, the ability to build consensus, an engaging personality, and a love of learning.  The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with the Principal in all areas of educational programming, planning and development, professional growth and evaluation of teachers, student achievement, and the general operation and administration of the school.

1.     Master’s degree or higher;

2.     Current and valid certification as a Maine Middle School Assistant Principal;

3.     Five (5) years of successful school administrative experience (middle school administrative experience preferred);

4.     Experience as a middle school teacher;

5.     Experience facilitating communication between groups and group decision making;

6.     Effective administrative and management skills;

7.     Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the effective utilization of technology and information management tools.


  1. Works collaboratively with the principal, team leaders and learning area leaders to ensure that each course taught at the middle school is based upon Maine’s Learning Results.
  2. Focuses staff development time, including release days, Monday afternoon meeting times and other similar opportunities on activities that are compatible with our school improvement plan.
  3. Supports a school environment in which staff, students and parents can develop a sense of trust, participation, understanding and productive interaction.
  4. Encourages and supports professional improvement of staff.
  5. Supports the student code of conduct based on the mission and core values of the Yarmouth schools.
  6. Evaluates the performance of professional personnel and support staff.
  7. Encourages staff involvement with local, regional, state, and national organizations and networks that support school improvement.
  8. Interviews professional and support staff in collaboration with other staff members, parents, and students and makes recommendations to the superintendent.
  9. Assumes responsibility for recommendations regarding student academic achievement by reviewing student progress reports, grade cards, standardized testing, and the results of local assessments.
  10. Assumes responsibility for the effective use of technology to enhance teaching and learning and ensures that our technology presence, including the school web page   and social media, remains current and inviting.
  1. Consults and collaborates with individual students and with groups of students pertinent to school issues and decision-making.
  2. Collaborates with the principal on the daily organization of the school including student scheduling, teacher assignments and various student services and activities.
  3. Establishes effective communication opportunities with community and parent organizations.
  4. Participates regularly on the system-wide administrative leadership team and other K-12 teams.
  5. Works with other schools to ensure appropriate transition from building to building including Portland Arts and Technology High School and any other schools Yarmouth students may attend.
  6. Chairs Individualized Educational Plan Team meetings as appropriate.
  7. Promotes the use of school volunteers and other Partners in Education resources.
  8. Interacts effectively with Community Services in scheduling building activities.
  9. Interprets School Committee policies to teachers, students, and parents and assists in making recommendations for new policies where changes are needed.
  10. Works with the principal to maintain accurate records and prepares reports as directed by the Superintendent or as otherwise mandated by Maine State Law.
  11. Works with colleagues in developing grants and other opportunities for alternative funding.
  12. Collaborates with the principal to supervise and coordinate the care of the school building with the Director of Maintenance and requests necessary maintenance and repairs to keep facilities in proper condition.
  13. Keeps the principal informed of events and activities of an unusual nature, as well as routine matters related to the principal, Superintendent’s or School Committee’s interests.
  14. Works with the Principal to plan and supervise fire drills and an emergency preparedness program in accordance with legal requirements and established school system procedures or as outlined in the Crisis Response Manual.
  15. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Principal.
