March Newsletter

March 5, 2019

Dear Rowe Families,

It is hard to believe that February has already flown by. We hope you all had a restful winter break and were able to enjoy some family time. I know some of you headed to warm places and for those who stayed in Maine, the weather allowed for some enjoyable time outside. Thanks to all who donated items for the Yarmouth Food Pantry prior to vacation. Your help is much appreciated!

Community Meeting

Our February community meeting was hosted by Mrs. Good’s and Ms. Melevsky’s kindergarten classes. We focused on a celebration of our 100th day of school. We did ten sets of ten different exercises, practiced our estimating skills, and counted by tens to find the student who was sitting in the 100th spot in the gym.  In addition, the hosting classes created a video demonstrating ways they show kindness to others that they shared with the audience.

Author Visit

As we head into March, we are looking forward to our author visit with Chris Van Dusen on March 21st. I am attaching the Royal River Books order form again for anyone who may be interested in purchasing a book signed by the author. The last day to order is this Friday, March 8th. Some questions have arisen about whether it is possible to send in books written by Chris that you already have at home to be signed. Unfortunately, only books purchased from Royal River Books will be signed by the author as he has a finite amount of time here. He will be signing many of the books in advance based on information included on the order form. Thanks in advance for your understanding! Van Dusen book order form

Raise Craze Fundraiser

As you read on, you will see that March is shaping up to be another busy month! You recently received information regarding the March PTO fundraiser. Flyers were sent home and I emailed a message last Thursday outlining the details and the contact information if any questions arise. PTO fundraisers provide a number of enrichment programs that we bring into the school. Their support and generosity are invaluable to us!

Article to share

Amy Finnen, one of our kindergarten teachers, recently came across an article focusing on the importance of reading aloud to children. We thought you might find this article of interest since it was written by a parent for parents. Enjoy! Read Aloud article

Rowe Show musical performance for first graders

The Rowe Show is a musical performance for first-grade students only on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Yarmouth High School Performing Arts Center (YPAC).  Please note that this performance falls before April vacation; we encourage families to be in attendance for this special evening! The date for this is set about a year in advance due to high demand for the Yarmouth Performing Arts Center throughout the school year.  We hope you enjoy this special evening.

Lost and Found

We have a number of items accumulating in our lost and found, many of which are single gloves and mittens. Please stop by the table in our lobby if you are coming in for a parent-teacher conference in the near future and are missing anything. There are also a number of other items there such as coats and snow pants.

Substitute Teachers needed:

Our schools are all still in need of substitute teachers. If you or anyone you know may be interested, please direct calls to Melissa Marston at our superintendent’s office for more information. The telephone number there is 846-5586.

Parent/School Alliance: Technology Use Interactive Workshop

The next Yarmouth Parent/School Alliance is just around the corner!

Tuesday, March 19, 2019

6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Yarmouth High School School Cafeteria

The Yarmouth Parent/School Alliance is an opportunity for parents and schools to communicate with each other, learn together and support one another. At our last meeting in February, participants heard from Jonathan R. Werner on the rise and impact of addictive technology. Technology, like computers and smartphones, gives us incredible access to information and one another. However, it can also easily take over our attention and have a negative impact on our well being. Young people are even more susceptible to their draw because of their developmental stage combined with growing up in a world where they are ever present. Through this interactive workshop with Erica Marcus, families will learn more about this modern phenomenon and how it impacts frequent and dependent users.

We will:

  • Review current research around screen use

  • Identify your current technology habits

  • Practice some mindful technology use

  • Create a Mindful Technology Use Plan for your family

At the end of this interactive workshop, participants will leave with an understanding of how to manage their technology use within their families. We hope that you will be able to join us!  Please pre-register for the event by filling out this form.

Erica Marcus, MAT, founded Wise Minds. Big Hearts. to offer mindfulness programming for families, students, and schools throughout New England. She has spent over fifteen years working with young people as a mindfulness educator, classroom teacher, outdoor educator, and senior wilderness youth therapy field staff member. She draws upon her expertise as a certified Mindful Schools Instructor and yoga teacher to help young people cultivate healthy relationships with themselves, one another, and technology.
